About the Cottage
Staithes was once one of the largest fishing ports on the north east coast of the United Kingdom and an important source of the minerals Jet, Iron, Alum and Potash. Staithes today is a very attractive tourist destination of great interest to both the amateur and professional Geologist. Staithes was also home to many hero's. From Captain James Cook, to those with their names recorded in stone on the War Memorial, and those who today at the sound of the alarm signal take the Staithes Lifeboat to sea as their ancestors have done for the last 100 years.
The unique beauty of the area attracted numerous artists who became known as the Staithes Group and they arrived on what must have been a very spectacular railway, sadly demolished by Dr Beeching!
Barrass House (Barrass is Viking for steps) commands an excellent position in the lower part of Staithes village and is situated at the top of Barrass Square. It is only 50 metres away from the sea and the Cod and Lobster public house. The cottage, dating back at least 300 years, retains many of its original features and due to recent refurbishment also boasts all the modern conveniences, one would expect from contemporary living. A multifuel stove provides a focal point for the lounge and also runs the central heating and hot water. A cabinet stores away the TV, video, DVD and audio systems. There are 2 bedrooms, a family bathroom with full size bath. Downstairs is a fully fitted kitchen with washing machine, electric and microwave ovens. Six people can be accommodated.
