  The very first thing you need when you start using a computer is VIRUS protection software
  You Must keep this uptodate and run it reglaly Check how many files have been inspected
  You should also run windows updates frequently. Windows is a complicated piece of software and is vunerable to being attacked. Microsoft issue updates when an attack is detected to prevent your system being violated.
  Other essential software is Anti Spyware. Essentially this attempts to stop programs being downloaded onto your computer which check up on what you are doing.
  You should also ensure that the Privacy settings in Internet Explorer are set as high as possible without interfeering with your requirements.
  Do NOT download unsolicited software to remove viruses. Some of my clients have needed a complete computer rebuild after being frightened into loading some software that SAID they had a VIRUS. The software then demanded money before allowing the computer to continue working

  There are out on the web some free specialised software that may help
   
  If All else fails you should always have a full backup of any data on the system and all the software disks. Ideally a full system backup would be nice
